Lucha Libre Masks

How to make a lucha wrestling mask is simple, but you do need some basic skills including drawing and sewing.  We'll walk you through making a pattern.

First step is to come up with a design.  What is the theme of your mask?  Most masks have a message, and to truly convey your luchadore persona, your character should have a theme, message, identity, or demogrpahic they appeal to and complete.

The next step is deciding on colors and material.  Will your mask have zippers?  Will it be looser or tight fitting? Will it have protrusions(such as horns)?  The basic materials you will need are fabric.  A good spandex fabric or stretchy mesh works best, at least for the bottom layer.  It provides breathability.  After that layer you can add on whatever fabrick you want, but heavier materials like leather is not always the best choice, but still work if it conveys your character.

The tools you will need are paper(preferably large paper, at least 20" in both direction.  Go to a fabric store and you can buy rolls for cheap.  You will also need a sewing machine and thread(don't forget to get complimentary colors to your mask), and you will need a pencil and marker for the design.  It's also a good idea to have a photo copier, so you can reuse your pattern, or make changes without starting over if you mess up.

First step is to measure the width of your forehead and neck.  This is important.  Next, you want to make your pattern in two halves that split down the middle.  Divide your measurements in half, and make the pattern to conform to each side of the face.  Each side will have eye holes and half a mouth.  Also, add a quarter inch on all openings and places where the mask will be sewed together.

Now make pattern items for the embellishments such as stripes, and complimentary colors in eye holes and mouth.

If you have protrusions, make them out of styrofoam, and then make a pattern of them.

Cut out the pattern and use it to cut out the fabric.

Sew together.

Wear.  Kick butt.
